A 130,000-year record of Levantine Intermediate Water flow variability in the Corsica Trough, western Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Toucanne, Samuel; Jouet, Gwenael; Ducassou, Emmanuelle; Bassetti, Maria-angela; Dennielou, Bernard; Minto'O, Charlie Morelle Angue; Lahmi, Marjolaine; Touyet, Nicolas; Charlier, Karine; Lericolais, Gilles; Mulder, Thierry.
Sortable silt particle-size data and stable isotope analyses from the Corsica Trough, western Mediterranean Sea, provide a continuous palaeoceanographic record of the inflow, ventilation and vertical fluctuations of the Levantine Intermediate Water (LIW) in the northern Tyrrhenian Sea for the last 130,000 years. The results presented herein reveal that climate changes drive the Mediterranean intermediate circulation on Milankovitch to millennial time-scales. Intensified intermediate inflow and ventilation in the Corsica Trough occurred throughout the last glacial interval, with a cold / faster – warm / slower pattern existing between the Dansgaard-Oeschger climatic oscillations (including Heinrich events) and the LIW variability. By contrast, a weak...

A high-resolution temporal record of environmental changes in the Eastern Caribbean (Guadeloupe) from 40 to 10 ka BP ArchiMer
Royer, Aurelien; Malaize, Bruno; Lecuyer, Christophe; Queffelec, Alain; Charlier, Karine; Caley, Thibaut; Lenoble, Arnaud.
In neotropical regions, fossil bat guano accumulated over time as laminated layers in caves, hence providing a high-resolution temporal record of terrestrial environmental changes. Additionally, cave settings have the property to preserve such organic sediments from processes triggered by winds (deflation, abrasion and sandblasting) and intense rainfall (leaching away). This study reports both stable carbon and nitrogen isotope compositions of frugivorous bat guano deposited in a well-preserved stratigraphic succession of Blanchard Cave on Marie-Galante, Guadeloupe. These isotopic data are discussed with regard to climate changes and its specific impact on Eastern Caribbean vegetation during the Late Pleistocene from 40 to 10 ka cal. BP. Guano delta C-13...

A two-million-year-long hydroclimatic context for hominin evolution in southeastern Africa ArchiMer
Caley, Thibaut; Extier, Thomas; Collins, James A.; Schefuss, Enno; Dupont, Lydie; Malaize, Bruno; Rossignol, Linda; Souron, Antoine; Mcclymont, Erin L.; Jimenez-espejo, Francisco J.; Garcia-comas, Carmen; Eynaud, Frederique; Martinez, Philippe; Roche, Didier M.; Jorry, Stephan; Charlier, Karine; Wary, Melanie; Gourves, Pierre-yves; Billy, Isabelle; Giraudeau, Jacques.
The past two million years of eastern African climate variability is currently poorly constrained, despite interest in understanding its assumed role in early human evolution1,2,3,4. Rare palaeoclimate records from northeastern Africa suggest progressively drier conditions2,5 or a stable hydroclimate6. By contrast, records from Lake Malawi in tropical southeastern Africa reveal a trend of a progressively wetter climate over the past 1.3 million years7,8. The climatic forcings that controlled these past hydrological changes are also a matter of debate. Some studies suggest a dominant local insolation forcing on hydrological changes9,10,11, whereas others infer a potential influence of sea surface temperature changes in the Indian Ocean8,12,13. Here we show...

African monsoon enhancement during the penultimate glacial period (MIS 6.5 similar to 170 ka) and its atmospheric impact ArchiMer
Tisserand, Amandine; Malaize, Bruno; Jullien, Elsa; Zaragosi, Sebastien; Charlier, Karine; Grousset, Francis.
A reconstruction of northwest African summer monsoon strength during the cold marine isotopic stage (MIS) 6 indicates a link to the seasonal migration of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). High-resolution studies of eolian dust supply and sea surface temperature recorded in marine core MD03-2705, on the Mauritanian margin, provide a better understanding about the penultimate glacial history of northwestern African aridity/humidity and upwelling coastal activity. Today, site MD03-2705 experiences increased upwelling and dust flux during the winter months, when the ITCZ is in a southerly position. Analyses of foraminifera isotopic composition suggest that during MIS 6.5 (180 - 168 ka) the average position of the ITCZ migrated north, marked by an...

In coastal systems, the multiplicity of sources fueling the pool of particulate organic matter (POM) leads to divergent estimations of POM composition. Eleven systems (two littoral systems, eight embayments and semi-enclosed systems and one estuary) distributed along the three maritime façades of France were studied for two to eight years in order to quantify the relative contribution of organic matter sources to the surface-water POM pool in coastal systems. This study was based on carbon and nitrogen elemental and isotopic ratios, used for running mixing models. The POM of the estuary is dominated by terrestrial material (93% on average), whereas the POM of the other systems is dominated by phytoplankton (84% on average). Nevertheless, for the latter...

Organic carbon accumulation in modern sediments of the Angola basin influenced by the Congo deep sea fan ArchiMer
Baudin, Francois; Martinez, Philippe; Dennielou, Bernard; Charlier, Karine; Marsset, Tania; Droz, Laurence; Rabouille, Christophe.
Geochemical data (total organic carbon-TOC content, δ13Corg, C:N, Rock-Eval analyses) were obtained on 150 core tops from the Angola basin, with a special focus on the Congo deep sea fan. Combined with the previously published data, the resulting dataset (322 stations) shows a good spatial and bathymetric representativeness. TOC content and δ13Corg maps of the Angola basin were generated using this enhanced dataset. The main difference in our map with previously published ones is the high terrestrial organic matter content observed downslope along the active turbidite channel of the Congo deep sea fan till the distal lobe complex near 5,000 m of water-depth. Interpretation of downslope trends in TOC content and organic matter composition indicates that...

Origin and distribution of the organic matter in the distal lobe of the Congo deep-sea fan – A Rock-Eval survey ArchiMer
Baudin, Francois; Stetten, Elsa; Schnyder, Johann; Charlier, Karine; Martinez, Philippe; Dennielou, Bernard; Droz, Laurence.
The Congo River, the second largest river in the world, is a major source of organic matter for the deep Atlantic Ocean because of the connection of its estuary to the deep offshore area by a submarine canyon which feeds a vast deep-sea fan. The lobe zone of this deep-sea fan is the final receptacle of the sedimentary inputs presently channelled by the canyon and covers an area of ~2500 km². The quantity and the source of organic matter preserved in recent turbiditic sediments from the distal lobe of the Congo deep-sea fan were assessed using Rock-Eval pyrolysis analyses. Six sites, located at approximately 5000 m water-depth, were investigated. The mud-rich sediments of the distal lobe contain high amounts of organic matter (~3.5 to 4% Corg), the origin...
